Remove the background from an image

Cut out a product, person or logo and put it on a transparent background. Kiln Photo finds the subject automatically, and a layer mask lets you fix the edges by hand. Your file stays on your device and there are no credits to buy.

Remove a background No sign-up. Files never leave your device.

How to remove a background

  1. Click Remove a background and open your image. Select › Subject runs as soon as it loads and selects the main object.
  2. Choose Layer › Layer Mask › Reveal Selection. The background disappears behind a checkerboard; nothing is deleted.
  3. Refine the edge: paint the mask with the Brush tool, black to hide and white to bring back. Use Select › Modify › Feather for softer hair edges.
  4. Export with File › Export As › PNG to keep the transparency.

Tips

  • For a white or single-colour background, Select › Color Range on the background followed by Select › Inverse is often faster and cleaner.
  • Remove a leftover coloured fringe with Layer › Matting › Defringe after applying the mask.

Good to know

Select Subject is a classic (non-AI) segmenter. It works best on a distinct subject against a plain or contrasting background, such as product shots, logos and portraits on a wall. For busy scenes, use the Quick Selection or Object Selection tool and paint the mask to finish.

Is it really free?

How do I get a white background instead?

After masking, add Layer › New Fill Layer › Solid Color in white and drag it below your photo.
