Free stock photos, right inside the editor

Kiln Photo has a built-in image search over Openverse, an open index of more than 900 million openly licensed works. It shows only public-domain results (CC0 and Public Domain Mark), so anything you add can be used for free, even commercially, without credit.

Open the editor No sign-up. Searches go to Openverse; your own files stay on your device.

How to free stock photos

  1. Click Open the editor above, or open your own photo with File › Open.
  2. Click Images in the bar on the right edge of the editor.
  3. Type what you're looking for, such as mountain or vintage bicycle, and press Search. Narrow it with Any shape (wide, tall, square) or a source such as NASA, The Met or Silhouettes (SVG).
  4. Click a picture. It is added as a new layer above the current one, centred and scaled to fit the canvas.
  5. Resize or move it with Edit › Free Transform, then save with File › Export › Export As.

Tips

  • Leave Add credit note on to keep the title, author and source link as a note on the canvas; public-domain images don't require credit, but it's a courtesy.
  • Scroll down in the results to load more.
  • The images are placed as smart objects, so you can scale them down and back up without losing quality.

Questions

Can I use these images commercially?

Every result is marked CC0 or Public Domain Mark, which means no copyright restrictions are claimed. People in a photo may still have rights over how their likeness is used, so take care with recognisable faces and trademarks in ads.

Where do the images come from?

From Openverse, which indexes Flickr, Wikimedia Commons, iNaturalist, Europeana, the Smithsonian, The Met, Rijksmuseum, NASA, rawpixel, StockSnap and more.

Is there a limit?

Openverse allows each visitor a limited number of searches per minute and per day. If you hit it, Kiln retries through its own connection; if that's busy too, wait a minute.
