Blur the background of a photo

Make the subject pop by blurring everything behind it, like a portrait-mode phone shot or a fast lens.

How to blur a photo background

  1. Click Blur a background and open your photo. Select › Subject selects the person or object.
  2. Choose Select › Inverse so the background is selected, then Select › Modify › Feather by 2–5 px for a soft transition.
  3. Apply Filter › Blur › Lens Blur for realistic bokeh, or Gaussian Blur for a simple soft blur.
  4. Deselect (Ctrl/Cmd+D) and export.

Tips

  • Filter › Blur Gallery › Tilt-Shift gives a miniature-model look without any selection.
  • Duplicate the layer first so you can lower the blur's opacity afterwards.
